Pte. John Francis Young No.177239 87th Battalion, Canadian Grenadier Guards, 1st. Canadian Division at the battle of Dury Mill on the Drocourt-Queant Line, France, September 2,3 and 4, 1918.
Without hesitation under extreme enemy machine gun fire with absence of any significant cover this stretcher bearer tended wounded in the battlefield. Displaying absolute fearlessness he returned again and again to the field to tend wounded and when fire somewhat slackened organized stretcher parties to evacuate wounded to safe quarters. His valour and devotion to duty contributed to the saving of many of his comrades over the three day battle. In recognition of his efforts awarded the Victoria Cross the only guardsman in the history of the regiment to receive same.
Have a Great day.
